It's a revolutionary step forward in the way Office works. I've been working with it and writing productivity guides for our internal use since late last year, and I'm very impressed, and excited, about Microsoft's design decisions with this release.
Scoble points to Brian Jones blog on the subject. Brian is a project manager on the Office team, and he covers some of the innovations due out later this year.
If you would like to register for the Beta 2 release, now would be a good time to do it.

Um... perhaps because some of us don't use Office to get our work done? ;-)
I'd be interested in hearing about some of the things you like about the new version, though. Has Microsoft fixed the file corruption issues in Word? What about auto-numbering? Can you use it without losing work now?
In short, hang the design decisions. Just tell me if they've fixed the problems.
