At least, that's according to a talk given today by C.J. Rayhill, the CIO of O'Reilly Media. She was a presenter at Mark Logic's webinar "The Reality of Web 2.0: O'Reilly Media's Safari U Leads By Example".
And fortunately for us, these publishing houses invite submissions from non-agented writers. That's actually not surprising in the computer book field, but if you were to look at the corresponding top 4 publishers in any other niche, you can almost count on being locked out of the query process unless you're represented by an agent.
Since our work as technical writers is often proprietary, or covered by an NDA, it makes it hard to build a body of work that can be shown when we're interviewing for other jobs. The solution? Write a book!
