The XML Open Standard and Documentation Tools
Part of what's so exciting about the impending release of Microsoft Office 2007 and Windows Vista is Microsoft's decision to adopt an open standard for their Office applications. If you're as interested as I am in watching this development progress, check out Brian Jones' Open XML Formats blog.

I'm particularly interested in seeing some new publishing tools developed for XML-based documents. Flare is supposed to be an XML Help authoring tool, made by the folks who created RoboHELP.

If you have any favorite XML authoring tools, please post them here.

Re-defining Technical Writing
According to one publisher I spoke with, books about technical writing haven't performed well. I have a theory about that. It's not that there aren't very many of us. The Society for Technical Communication has estimated that there are about 100,000... Continue Reading

Find a Niche to Call Your Own
In 1989, I was collaborating on creating an online database that would collect, store and search information from elementary school physical education programs. My partner in this project was a former Olympic medalist from the Czech Republic, who, at the... Continue Reading

Are Technical Writers Better Off With Less Technical Knowledge?
Ed left a comment to yesterday's post which I thought I'd address as a stand-alone issue, rather than in the Comments section. Ed's question is a good one, and in fact, it's one of the reasons why companies like to... Continue Reading

Editors and Writers are Different Species
In my experience, editors aren't writers, and writers aren't editors. Then again, many so-called "technical writers" aren't writers, but that's a different post.I recently had this discussion at work. The sort of documentation my team develops has a very specific... Continue Reading
