
Today, 17 years later, I'm interviewing a collection of top technology writers for my article on the Top Ten Technology Markets. Among the many questions that I'm asking them is "What's the one piece of advice that you'd offer aspiring technology writers who want to break into these high-paying markets?" One writer wrote back: "Find a niche, and fill it so completely that you're the only one who has expertise in that area."
As technical writers, it seems we too often settle for being generalists. Perhaps we need to specialize more. What do you think?






I think the issue here is simple. What do you do when you are a niche specialist and the niche goes away?
Without having generalist's skills, your retraining requirements may take so long as to put you out of business.
