Shawn Callahan replied to Kathy Sierra's post with his clarification on the mis-use of the knowledge pyramid. Rather than depicting data-information-knowledge in a pyramid or similarly linear order, he created a non-linear concept utilizing a "sense-making" arrow as the instrumental factor in applying knowledge to the information stream. In Shawn's words:
"Knowledge acts as an interpretant to turn data into information. The information we notice (we don’t notice all information channelled toward us), might create some level of dissonance (its surprises us or we ask ourselves, “What’s the story here?”) and if we care about resolving this dissonance we create knowledge. Knowledge is created through a sensemaking process."
To go one step further, I'd like to add that applied knowledge, with the benefit of experience, becomes wisdom.
