In my work as an editor, we have three magazines in the technology department. The first is computer gaming magazine with niche focus on online gaming. The second magazine is niched towards "tech you can bring with you", which includes mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, digital music players, digicams and their accessories. Finally we have the local franchise of PC Magazine that focuses more on "tech you can't put in your pocket" as well as IT solutions for SMEs. Three niches. One IT market. In a country where magazines is considered an A product, because apparently, not everyone likes reading.
Sometimes I wonder whether we should just have three niche magazines or one huge broad tech mag, just like T3 or Stuff for instance.
I think it's also about the way you present your writing style to the target reader - broad tech tends to be less geeky and more hip, bringing in lifestyle advertisers such as apparel, food, and other broad consumer goods.
