The emphasis on penmanship drills in the Palmer Method caused some to
think that Individuality was being placed on the altar of sacrifice. I
beg to disagree.
Even among the hundreds or so of us whose penmanship drew from the
elegant Palmer Method, one could spot sparks of individuality. These
came in the way the capital letters were formed, the way one letter
flowed into another, etc. To this day, I can recognize the handwriting
of my classmates who learned their Palmer Method well.
This reminds me of how military drills cause one to be both skilled
and able to perform certain exercises without thinking. But come the
day of combat or need, one fully expects different ways the individual
soldiers will face up to a given situation. Can you imagine the mess
in the battlefield if all of those involved moved together like in a
choreographed dance?
