the Palmer Method. It seems to have struck a responsive chord. Many of
them have belatedly realized the importance of good or fine
penmanship. And the Palmer Method certainly ranks among the best.
Short of engaging in the flourishes so common to pre 20th century
writing, the Palmer Method comes across as both readable and elegant.
In the various web articles on the Palmer Method, one gathers that
between the 1920s and the 1950s, the writing style enjoyed great
popularity. Until a shift of emphasis from teaching kids manuscript
ahead of cursive caused the general decline in handwriting ability and
legibility. As a result, the average adult writes like a kid, I kid
you not.
Now, with the benefit of hindsight, one thinks of the various
exercises that accompanied the subject of Penmanship in those days:
Up and Down, Push and Pull, Circle Circle, AAA, BBB, CCC, ad
infinitum. We must have done those exercises thousands of times
over....all in the name of disciplined penmanship.
