Thus, the average Asian who has traveled much over the region gets to appreciate regional, national, and yes, tribal nuances and habits. What is all right in one country is completely taboo in another. Just the other day, I was discussing with a friend what I had read somewhere in the Net. It seems that a Western-educated person made a statement that he liked to look a person he was talking to in the eye, and if the other fellow avoided eye contact, then he knew he could not trust him.

In Asia, and probably many other parts of the world, one tends to avoid direct eye contact because it is considered bad manners to do so. This theory does not hold water, therefore. I myself try not to stare directly into the eyes of the people I talk to, knowing that this may be misconstrued as rude behavior on my part.
