One very sensitive topic that should be treated gingerly is Religion. Asia itself has a variety of religions or spiritual persuasions:  Buddhism, Shintoism, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Catholicism, Christianity (other strains), and numerous forms of animist and pagan beliefs to complete an already complicated picture.

In and similar places, talking openly about one’s faith often invites the unwanted attention of the authorities. Other countries watch over people engaged in religious activities to ensure that they do not engage in subversive – i.e., against the state – activities. In confessional countries with a state religion, it never pays to say anything detrimental to said religion. Even the more open-minded countries often try to define areas where the spirit reigns supreme and those situations wherein temporal authority resides.

But the general rule is to never say anything that will upset others whose belief systems go contrary or parallel to one’s own creed. To do otherwise would be to invite virulent – and oftentimes violent – reactions from the offended party.
