In my younger years, when I wrote an article for a school publication, I more or less knew my target market. In later years, writing a financial column for a business daily, the market expanded somewhat and probably included a lot of people not normally interested in plain facts and figures. It was about this time that I decided to expand the scope of what I would write about on a weekly basis, tackling any issue even remotely connected to the arcane world of finance and business.
Now, we have the internet with its world-wide audience that can tune in, look in, and comment on anything posted in the more public sites. Given the multi-faceted world we live in, it pays to make sure that what we write will go across borders….sometimes into relatively hostile territory.
Sometimes, even the most innocent of statements can get one into trouble. I see this happening quite often in blog sites that invite comments or replies. I am not sure which are worse, the poorly crafted posts or the inane comments. In fact, many comments degenerate into name calling and racist slurs.
People who engage in such activities must have a place all for themselves in cyberspace where they can heckle and insult each other without bringing innocents like us into the picture.
