The word ALTERNATE is an adjective and refers to a sequence of events, i.e., something happening, coming, in turns, one after the other. For example: The assembly line was producing alternate colors of candy, first Reds, then Blues, and then Yellows, in that order. Another example would be: Fr. Scanlan visits us on alternate Sundays to celebrate mass, while Fr. O’Malley takes up the slack on the other Sundays.
The word ALTERNATIVE can be either a noun or an adjective. Originally, the word referred to the offering of a choice between two possibilities, but has been expanded to mean a choice among several options. In fact, one may make use of alternative words such as CHOICE, OTHER, and OPTIONS to express the same meaning. Example: The teacher found she had three alternatives: To pass the class entirely; To allow for a retake of the exam; or to simply do nothing and accept the grades of what she thought was a tainted exercise. She felt that her options were limited to these three only. She failed to realize that other avenues were actually open to her.
