These two prefixes are so similar in spelling that they are often mixed up in daily usage. And yet, their meanings are miles apart.
The word ANTI- means “Against” or “Opposite”. It may be used in different ways. Example: The Anti-Abortion rally pitted Pro-Lifers against their perennial nemesis, the Anti-Lifers.
ANTE- simply means “Before”, and is placed before a noun to describe something that goes or happens prior. Thus: When one describes another as being antediluvian, he usually means that the fellow is so old fashioned because he comes from that age before the deluge. Or: The architect designed an anteroom for each of the main bedrooms in the house.
