The words ABUSE and MISUSE are both verbs and mean “to use (something) in an incorrect way”.  They do not mean exactly the same thing, however.

The word ABUSE refers to the wrong use of abstract things. Examples would be privilege, power, position, advantage, etc.  It is not often used these days in reference to the wrong use of objects, e.g., machinery, tools, toys, and so forth.

Example:  Mr. X must not abuse his position as Mayor by using government funds to purchase a refrigerator and a TV for his home.

The word MISUSE, on the other hand, refers mostly to the wrong use of objects or solid things.

Example: Mayor X must not misuse the money of the municipality by purchasing appliances for his convenience at home.
