Last year, a major portion of the southern part of the US got battered by hurricanes streaming out of the Gulf. To those of us from overseas, it was easy to feel for the many who lost house, work, loved ones, and even dignity as Katrina left destruction in her wake. This year, much of Asia got pounded by the Pacific equivalent of hurricanes, the dreaded typhoons or cyclones that brought both heavy rains and strong winds to different parts of the continent.
Having just gone through the worst typhoon to hit our country in decades, I became one with the many who had suffered immensely over the past year. No longer cast as a casual observer, my family and friends were suddenly thrust into the roles of participants in a disaster that respected no one. A great leveler, indeed!
