The words AVENGE and REVENGE are almost similar in meaning in usage, and yet, they possess subtle differences that will be pointed out next.
According to a text I studied, the word AVENGE is more properly used when the subject of the verb is retaliating for a wrong suffered – most often by someone else – in order to achieve justice. For example: The brave upland warrior vowed to avenge the wicked ambush suffered by members of his clan.
The word REVENGE, on the other hand, is usually used when the subject of the verb is retaliating for a wrong suffered in order to satisfy his/ her feelings of anger or resentment. Example: The brave upland warrior vowed revenge against the enemies of his clan for the injustice they had done to him.
