Again, these two words that seem similar actually mean slightly different things in actual usage. Thus, an AWARD is usually something given to a person for something done well, for excellence, bravery or merit. It can also refer to something given to another as a result of a decision made by a judge or independent arbitrator. Examples: Jane received an award for her fine quilt design. As a result, the judges also decided to award her with a cash prize over and above her citation for excellence.
A REWARD is usually something given in exchange for good work, excellent service rendered, or similar action. Example: The boys behaved so well that their mom deigned to give them a reward of one lollipop each.
