The original usage of the word PERENNIAL was in the context of something lasting or continuing throughout an entire year. In more modern usage, it has also come to be used in the sense of something being recurrent, perpetual, or continuous. Among garden lovers, a perennial usually refers to a plant or tree that remains green or lasts for a few years.
Example: That Ms Grundy seems to be a perpetual grouch, because she is perennially looking for something to bitch about.
The word ANNUAL usually means having something happen once a year. When applied to plants and trees, it refers to plants that last only a year, or flower once a year, etc. Example: The vine in my garden blooms perennially, whereas my roses only bear bulbs on an annual basis.
