The death of newspapers

The title of this piece will probably earn me the ire of every newspaper publisher or owner in the world. And yet, the idea is not mine. It is a pet theory held by those who feel that the computer and the internet will render books, magazines, and newspapers obsolete. Really?

There is something to waking up in the morning and reading a newspaper – or at least, getting the day’s news from the TV – while having breakfast or the first of many coffee fixes. Somehow, I cannot envision trolling the internet for my daily news quota. Neither can I picture my self holding on to my laptop while trying to read in bed!

There are certain pleasures in life that cannot just be thrown aside in favor of newer technology. I like reading and re-reading books. Another of life’s pleasures is going to second-hand bookstores to pick up bargains and the occasional treasure find: a rare and out of print volume.

If I am going to view anything over my computer, it will probably be a DVD of a good movie.
