When one uses the word BIGWIG these days, it is usually in reference to a big-shot or important person. In the corporate setting, you could call your department head the "floor bigwig" and your big boss the "head bigwig" for maximum effect.
British barristers and judges have had this practice – still in use in some Commonwealth countries to this day – of wearing wigs made of horsehair or some other suitable material. Pretty soon, it evolved into a silly contest: The bigger the wig, the more important one was said to be. Of course, this did not really give an idea of one’s real importance, but the practice persisted.
