
Back then, as early as the 14th or 15th centuries, the more common material used for writing was the common slate. Temporary notices were written on slates which were then posted in prominent areas for all to see.
Naturally, political leaders found use for these materials. Before long, lists of nominees or proposals would be written on slates and presented to a group or party for deliberation. Additions, deletions, etc would be made until a final form would be approved by the body. This form of writing and deliberating found its way into the United States, and pretty soon, the end result in this method of choosing a list of candidates was referred to as a slate.
