Having just gone through Halloween, it is interesting to find out where the word GOBLIN came from. Interestingly enough, it has nothing to do with witches or warlocks, but in beautiful fabrics.
Sometime in the mid-1400s, a bright red fabric became the vogue. It was beautiful to look at and quite attractive in its color. Pretty soon, a nasty rumor circulated accusing the fabric-makers, Gilles and Jehan Gobelin, of having sold their souls to the devil in order to make such beautiful and brightly colored fabrics. On an unfair note, people began to accuse them of sorcery and consorting with the demon. Thus, their name came to connote an evil spirit. In later years, their name metamorphosed into GOBLIN, but still referring to an evil spirit. (They must have had a nasty competitor or jealous neighbors!)
