Ever wonder why we sometimes refer to a loved one as a FLAME? Or a former lover or special friend as an OLD FLAME? Apparently, the word was used for many centuries to mean one’s special someone or love.
French poets, many of them writing in couplets, looked for a word to rhyme with the word Love in French (aime), and often came up with the word flamme. Even the English considered it sophisticated to quote French poetry. The constant use of the word FLAMME led to its use in the English also to describe one’s beloved, one’s FLAME.
When our passion for something - like work - is gone, we can say that our flame has been extinguished. This can also be related to the saying the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as fast. Something to think about with the people we work with.
