WORD ORIGIN: LUNATIC

sourced by JMJF

Roman mythology gives us the moon goddess LUNA, whose name provides the origin of the word LUNATIC. The ancient Romans believed that the moon goddess created crazy people. Thus the use of her name to describe those gone “loco”.

Ages of observation of the moon and its effect on people have led many to believe that personality quirks like violence and lunacy are directly affected by the phases of the moon.
