In today’s world of horses, there is an athletic event that tests the mettle of both rider and mount: the STEEPLECHASE. It has evolved over time into a race over a course prepared with all sorts of obstacles that riders are supposed to surmount at the least possible time with the least amount of penalties.
It is interesting to note that the word had its origins in playful races that English folk would engage in. They would call such races as “Hunting the Steeple” because those involved would challenge the other, and point to a distant church steeple as the object of the race. The first to reach the church would be declared the winner. Gradually, these races became known as steeplechases. As time went by, the creation of courses with obstacles evolved into the modern day race described earlier.
