The word SWEATER has its origins in Horse Racing or training. During tough workouts, some trainers would drape a heavy blanket over their respective horses to induce free perspiration. Gradually, these blankets became known as SWEATERS.
In later times, athletes and others would work out while wearing thick flannel underclothing or jackets. They found that they lost more pounds by doing so. It did not take long for these garments to also be called sweaters. It did not take long for the garment industry to look at these unfashionable shirts and turn them into more glamorous clothing made of wool. Then, the film industry got into the act and made their stars wear these stylish garments while outdoors riding or engaging in sports. Pretty soon, everyone wanted to own or use a sweater, now fashionable and attractive, compared to its rather dumpy origins.
