Trying to write well with half an eye cocked for proper punctuation and spelling would probably be second nature to those who have had editorial or journalistic experience. But these days, with the increasing use of email and other online communication tools, it is easy to forget the rules or the niceties of the written language. I once thought that all articles appearing in newspapers of magazines were the epitome of perfection as far as the English language was concerned. Until a desk editor promptly deflated this perception and observed that what some of us used to do as editors before were precisely being done by them (as editors) these days without exception. It seem that most reporters submit their pieces on an “as is” basis, and then the editors would have to go to work editing or correcting said articles in order to make them suitable for printing. Some things never change.
