Funny that I had to inlude a smiley on this one. As I'm typing this in a coffee shop (do you get actual writing done in a coffee shop?) a colleague dropped by for a meeting and he was quite early - I was expecting him to be a bit later and was ... well ... AM currently engaged in a very long thought process that if broken, would prove fatal to the rest of the world.
A lot of writers who are in this mode of writing consider it a mortal sin to have themselves interrupted by something or someone. The most cordial thing to do woule be to simply acknowledge your guest's presence and say something as simple as "I'm sorry I have to finish this. Give me a few minutes."
A lot of people try to go through juggling the conversation and writing simultaneously. Sometimes it is just best to close your laptop lid and resume later on - which is by the way one reason why I got a Macintosh. The sleep mode is just fantastic.
