As a contributing editor, I highlight a huge bit of the "contributing" part which means I rarely go to the office. I am only there for editorial meets which happen once or twice a month and I'm fine with that.
Over at Contract Worker, there is a discussion about how freelancers are immune, if not shielded from office politics. I personally feel that the job as a freelancer is a double edged sword - you get no benefits but you also can choose to stay away from "too much office."
At the end of the day, as a writer, the most that I worry about is my intellectual property that MAY get compromised by the many hands at the office space since you have no control over what goes on.
I'm actually glad to have had a good working relationship with my former boss (used to be a full timer and now I'm back to consulting) so the respect goes both ways.

This is an assuring post - freelancing is getting more and more attractive the more I read/think about it!
